A would-be car thief fails in his attempt to steal the car, is chased, tackled, and arrested

An attempted car theft is reported in Brampton by CBC’s Greg Ross. Three masked men broke into a house and stole the keys to the car. Two of them flee. The third man gets into a car in the driveway but can’t start it. After fleeing, family members tackle him and pin him down until police arrive.

Early Friday, a Brampton, Ont., family intervened to stop a car theft in progress, police say.

At around 2:30 a.m., Peel police responded to an incident at a home near Castlemore Road and Goreway Drive.

Police say three men broke into a house, stole a set of car keys, fled on foot, and the one with the keys attempted to steal a car in the driveway.

The residents of the home chased him down the street, tackled and pinned him down until officers arrived.

A family member, Gurbaj Sanghera, 18, says car thefts put lives at risk, and the police should do more to stop them.

“I hope no one has to experience this,” Sanghera told CBC Toronto on Friday. “You must be very careful and take precautions.”

Faraday box key

When Sanghera heard a loud bang, he ran downstairs and saw three masked men inside his home. He said he froze, before they began running and he chased them.

He held a set of keys taken from a Faraday box meant to block keyfob signals.

I’m screaming as I make my way over here, praying my brother and dad hear me. And they do hear me.” he said.

One man struggles to get into an Audi in the driveway as two men run away. Sanghera’s brother was able to stop him by using another set of keys. The car had an anti-theft lock on it. He got into the car, but could not drive away and appeared to lock himself in.

After getting out of the vehicle, the man started walking away.

Sanghera said, “He realizes he’s not getting it. He tries to escape.”.

Sanghera, his father, and his brother chased the man and restrained him until the police arrived.

According to Peel police spokesperson Const. Sarah Patten, four vehicles were stolen on the same street between August 2022 and August 2023.

One count of break-in and one count of theft over $5,000 have been filed against a 25-year-old Toronto man.
