The fire that destroyed a partially built and off-grid house of a man between Kingston and Poulsbo was thought to have been started by a chimney.

At 12:50 am on Sept. 4, fire crews responded to Dawn Breaker Drive after a 911 call from a neighbor who described smoke and flames seen through trees. Dawn Breaker Drive is a residential road that runs between Port Gamble Road, and Miller Bay Road.

In just 10 minutes, the first North Kitsap Fire & Rescue unit from Suquamish arrived on the scene. It was a difficult to access location down a steep drive. The 671 foot structure had been fully engulfed in flames.

The Jeep of the man, which had been parked 10 feet away, was badly damaged by fire. Flames began to spread into the forest. The fire was put out by firefighters using water from the engines and tender trucks. There were no fire hydrants nearby.

The units from Central Kitsap, Bainbridge Island, and Poulsbo then returned to the stations. NKF&R crews continued to dig through the debris for several more hours in order to ensure that hot spots had been extinguished.

He said that earlier in the night, a fire was started on the woodstove in his home. He saw flames later through the skylight, and escaped from the building. The investigator, despite the fact that the man claimed to have cleaned the chimney flue, believes the material in the flue ignited easily and spread due to the inadequate distance between the chimney’s components and combustible materials.

Officials from the fire department recommend chimneys and fireplaces are cleaned and inspected by professionals at least one time a year. Home was uninsured; man receives assistance from American Red Cross.
