Brixton residents are advised to close their windows due to the smoke that is visible.
In the early morning hours this morning, Friday 8th September, a major fire broke out in South London. A fire is being fought by around 100 firefighters at a landfill, while part of the building collapsed.
Fire brigade reports that the entire Herne Hill Waste Transfer Station is on fire. As a safety precaution, 12 gas cylinders were removed and stored in a safe place. Some cylinders may explode when heated.
The smoke from the Shakespeare Road fire is causing residents to close their windows.
Road closures are in place.
Water towers of 32-metres turntables have been used to combat the fires.

Paul Sadler is the Station Commander at the scene. He said, “Crews are making steady progress on the Shakespeare Road fire.” Crews will be on the scene all day as this incident is expected to last a long time.
The fire crews are working to control the fire. We know that it is a hot night but it produces a lot of smoke. Residents in the area should keep windows and doors shut as much as possible.
Please avoid this area as there are road closures.
