The Community of Madrid’s public health is under water. Images released by the Workers’ Commissions section (CCOO), the union of the University Hospital of La Paz, show that the hospital was flooded once again on Thursday following a ruptured pipe.
Workers at the centre say that “the entire plant has been flooded”, and they ask for an immediate response. The union explains that “the pipe which supplies water to Canal de Isabel II has ruptured due to works for the Metro Accessibility Plan.”
Water has completely covered the main entrance, waiting areas and rooms. Water has reached even the basements where there are changing rooms, equipment for x-rays and radiation oncology. This is not the first incident to occur in La Paz.

The University Hospital of La Paz also created images of saturation and collapse this summer. On some nights, 70 people have waited to enter the complex during night emergencies.
Workers have claimed that “435 bed were closed by the Ministry with the excuse of fewer patients coming in summer.” The medical staff has also complained about the lack of resources, and have set up beds on the halls because of the overwhelming number of patients.
The hospital also has over 11,000 biopsy samples awaiting analysis, and can experience delays up to one month in detecting and preventing cancer. The pathological anatomists reported thousands of tests that were not catalogued, including many essential ones for tumor prognosis.
Health workers have called the situation “urgent”, and requested more staff to help solve traffic jams. However, the Community of Madrid has not yet responded.
