After a pro Palestine rally in San Francisco on Saturday, antisemitic graffitis were found.
The District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a tweet on Sunday that the suspects are unknown, but it is assumed they were involved with the protest. The protest organizers were not happy with that statement.
After receiving several complaints from Muslim and Arab groups about the possible interpretation of the tweet, the DA removed that tweet Monday.
Spray-paintings of “Death 2 Israel”, “Kill a Settler”, and other words were found on a Bank Of America in San Francisco. After thousands of people marched along Market Street to call for the release of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip where Israel is at war with terrorist group Hamas, the graffiti was discovered.
There’s genocide in Gaza. “Israeli military has confirmed the deaths of over 1,000 children and 2,700 civilians,” Wassim Hage, with the Arab Resource Organizing Center who was among the protesters, said.
Ariel Koren, with Jewish Voices For Peace, was not happy with Jenkins’ Sunday evening tweet, in which she said that her office presumed the person who did the graffiti had been associated with a pro-Palestine protest. Koren was at Saturday’s demonstration in support of Palestinians.
The statement she made, it reveals Islamophobia. She said that it was also antisemitic, because she told lies about the Jewish Community. “Thousands of Jewish people who were part of this protest were involved,” she added.
Jenkins deleted her Monday post after saying this:
I listened to their concerns, and understood them. As a result of this understanding, I deleted the tweet. I do not support violence. “The clearly anti-Semitic grafitti has no place on the streets of San Francisco and we need to be aware that a single person choosing to commit hateful acts does not represent an entire group or faith.”
Hage stated that “discrediting our march for peace as anything other than a peaceful march would be extremely irresponsible at this time and an invitation to violent acts.”
Jenkins, the District Attorney also admitted that the graffiti could lead to hateful behavior against Jews or a retaliation. Tyler Gregory, President of Jewish Community Relations Council Bay Area Tyler Gregory believes that the graffiti was from the protest on Saturday. However, this does not mean Palestinians are terrorists.
Not all protestors are anti-Semitic, and not all support Hamas. However, some do. He said that just as we would not want others to believe our community was monolithic we should also avoid making the protestors appear monolithic.
Jenkins stated Monday that she is dedicated to the safety and security of every community, and anyone found guilty of a hate crime would be punished.
