Officials said that a neighbor stopped a fire from spreading in the kitchen of an east Bend house Friday night, using a fire extinguisher. However, about $30,000. worth of damage was done. Cooking oil spilled onto a stove burner ignited the fire.

Deputy Fire Marshall Cindy Kettering reported that Bend Fire & Rescue responded around 6 p.m., to reports of a kitchen fire spreading at a house in the 60000-block of Devon Circle just off Knott Road.

Kettering explained that “the family ran over to their neighbor’s home, and he grabbed his extinguisher to run and try to put out the fire.”

Kettering reported that arriving fire crews discovered the neighbor knocked out the majority of the fire using a chemical dry fire extinguisher. Kettering said that the fire spread quickly to the kitchen cabinets and combustibles around the stove.

She said that firefighters quickly extinguished the remaining flames. Smoke damage was found throughout the house. The structure was estimated to have suffered losses of $20,000 and its contents $10,000.

Four adults, three kids and a pet dog were living in the house. The American Red Cross came to help.

Kettering stated in a press release that “according to the US Fire Administration cooking fires were the leading cause of house fires, and injuries from home fires.” Always watch your cooking. Never leave it unattended. Keep pan handles facing the back of the oven.
