Eastern Cape South African Police Service Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Me, has applauded the efforts made by a police task force that over the weekend arrested and found five suspects in a number of crimes committed within the Joe Gqabi District.
As soon as the threats of robberies of houses and businesses were recognized, Brigadier Asogran Naidoo, Acting District commissioner of Joe Gqabi, established a task force to track down suspects.
The task team at Sterkspruit investigated information that Lesotho Nationals were at Makhetheng, robbing a shop/house at Thaba Lesoba in Cathberg.
As the team moved in, five men were found entering the home with bags. Three out of five were found to have firearms. The men were taken into custody.
When the members searched through their bags they found tobacco and groceries. Other groceries were also discovered hidden in cupboards, under beds and wardrobes.
They are suspected of committing various crimes including the illegal possession and use of firearms and ammunition, as well as possession of stolen or suspect property.
A suspect linked to the group, was arrested Monday 13th November 2023 after an exchange of fire with a guard at a business in Sterkspruit.
They are also wanted in a variety of other cases, including murders and attempted murders at Palmietfontein or Sterkspruit.
The detectives are also investigating other cases that may be connected to these suspects. The three confiscated firearms will now be sent for ballistics analysis.
On Sunday, Lieutenant General Mene commended the Task Team for its unwavering dedication to public safety.
The team’s meticulous investigations, their excellent informant network, and the collaboration they showed allowed them to work quickly and unfailingly in order to apprehend these suspects. Three firearms, as well as suspected stolen items were confiscated.
