The death toll in and around Beijing has reached 33. This includes five rescuers. Meanwhile, 18 other people are still missing, and heavy rains threaten the northern part of China.

In recent weeks there have been torrential downpours that have damaged infrastructure in China’s Capital and flooded the suburbs.

Due to the bad weather that has recently hit Beijing, there have been 33 deaths and another 18 people are still missing.

Beijing said that the heavy rains in the past few days caused 59,000 houses to collapse, almost 150 000 homes to be damaged, and more than 15 hectares of crops (37,000 acres of land) were flooded.

Beijing Vice Mayor Xia Limao stated at a press conference that over 100 bridges had been damaged.

Al Jazeera’s Katrina Yu, reporting from Beijing, reported that Typhoon Doksuri struck China over a week earlier, but the flooding and collapses of buildings are now showing the full extent of devastation.

This is the worst disaster that has hit the capital for years. Last time, a storm this size hit the capital was 2012. It struck the same areas where 80 people were killed a decade earlier.

Yu stated that “it is being asked now why the lessons of the last storm weren’t learned and why roads and buildings were not strengthened and more damage occurred.”

Flood waters have killed many people in the north of China. The area has experienced heavy rainfall since July.

China’s Ministry of Emergency Management announced last week that natural disasters were responsible for 147 deaths, disappearances and other incidents in the last month. 142 of those deaths and disappearances were due to flooding or geological disasters.

Hebei, the province that borders Beijing, has had 15 deaths and 22 missing as of Sunday. One person is missing and 14 have died in northeastern Jilin.

State media in Heilongjiang reported water levels above the warning level of dozens rivers.

The Yangtze River was the site of China’s most deadly and destructive flood since 1998.

In 2021, Zhengzhou’s provincial capital was flooded by record rains, which turned the streets into rivers, and flooded a subway. More than 300 died.

Other parts of China are experiencing the same extreme heat and drought that threatens crops and health.
