A first inspection determined that 13 % of the roof would need to be replaced.
A survey was conducted to determine the condition of the San Jose Church in Jachal after the Zonda Wind caused damage. The first assessment was done by the municipality of the department even though it does not fall under their jurisdiction. It determined that there is no danger that the temple will collapse and the most damaged part is the roof. The Provincial Directorate of Architecture will still conduct a thorough review to assess the extent of the damage, and determine what work needs to be done. It was determined that 13 % of the roof would need to be replaced. However, it’s not known how long it will take for the church to reopen. This temple was only reopened in less than two years after it had been closed for over a decade because of the risk of collapse.
Marcelo Muriel is the architect that directed this historic renovation and is the current Secretary of Infrastructure for the Municipality. He said that, after the inspection, an urgent and temporary repair was made to prevent greater harms. The sheet metal which fell and flew on top of the roof of this church penetrated both the thermal panels and sheets. The temporary fix was necessary because rain is forecast and if the roof leaks water can cause further damage to the ceiling. Muriel stated that the good news is there was no danger of collapse of any building structure.
Officials added that this temporary arrangement at the San Jose Church involved covering perforated sections of the sheet-metal roof with membrane. They clarified that these works are not within the municipal jurisdiction but the decision to intervene was taken “as part of a collaborative effort” due to the urgency of the situation.
Muriel said the roof was made of 30 sheets, of which four, or 13% of them were perforated. It must be replaced completely. It is not a very complex work, but it must be done by a specialist. A special permit will also be required because this is a National Historical Monument. The Archbishopric and the church authorities, I believe, have sent a letter to the Provincial Directorate of Architecture asking for a thorough review of damage as well as the determination of work that needs to be done so that all is fixed. We are currently waiting on the official assessment to determine how things go, and it’s not known yet when the temple can reopen.
After the inspection by the municipality, the official said that damage to electrical installations, some lights, and air conditioning pipes were also discovered.
For his part, Eduardo Gutierrez, priest in charge of the San Jose Church, confirmed that yesterday the note was presented in Architecture of the province requesting “technical-professional advice and evaluation” of the damage that the wind caused to the temple as well as “an action plan of the steps to follow for restoration.”
