Nathan Kitchens talked with one of Hardin County’s meteorologists, who had surveyed damage caused by a tornado.

A tornado struck on the south side Kenton, Saturday August 12th. It caused extensive damage, including uprooting trees and flattening a garage. The National Weather Service inspects the damages after every tornado to estimate the magnitude and reconstruct the tornado’s cycle. On Saturday afternoon, the crew from Wilmington drove to Wilmington in order to carry out this survey.

The first thing that we did upon arrival was to drive out in the fields west of Kenton, right before we reached the town. The damage began as we drove through the fields just west of Kenton and right before Kenton. We saw light metal debris and trees as the tornado grew stronger. But eventually, we noticed some structural damage, explained Nate McGinnis of National Weather Service Wilmington Meteorologist.

Doppler Radar determined this storm to be an EF-1 with wind speeds of up 90 mph twenty minutes prior to its arrival.

The damage was enough to show that it was an isolated event. There were no visible signs of damage on the north side. It is useful to know that damage caused by microbursts and straight-line wind are not as concentrated as they were here.

To estimate the wind speed, it is important to consider the damage and type of building. You can easily imagine that a barn and a house that are anchored on a foundation would have drastically different effects. The National Weather Service uses extensive research to determine their findings. They consider over two dozen indicators of damage.
